Genre Research - Conventions Of A Music Video Of My Genre
In hip hop music videos there are many conventions that is usually displayed through editing, cinematography, performance and mise-en-scene.
Mise-en-scene: hip hop is a genre which involves a lot of flashy expensive things and which is related through music videos because they often have bright lights like in the image below. while having bright lights artist often were dark colours and show is the setting like below.
Performance: in hip hop performance is often very energetic with lots of hand movement and attitude which has been a convention from the start as hip hop originated from a dance culture. in hip hop music like the one below there is often a lot of people from artists to extra's which is also a convention for artists to perform with a large large numbers of people in shot.
Editing: in hip hop music videos the editing is generally very fast paced due to the normal tempo and it often suits performances.
Cinematography: in hip hop music videos often just have variations of camera angles from the same position depending on the background like the music video below is all shot with the camera in the same position just at different angles

Bordwell and Thompson
Bordwelll and Thompson theories says editing is one image following another on the screen and this can create meaning as we move from one shot to the next.
one shot following another shot can explain what a the performer is thinking or saying like in the two images above were the second image explains what was being said in the first. often these shots used to explain what if being thought or said is cut aways and has no lip syncing.
Bordwell and Thompson main focus was Hollywood or continuity editing. They noticed how the shots can connect in different ways they identified 4 identified 4 different relationships between shots and editing:
Graphic :
The transitions between shots can be linked graphically: Their 'pictorial qualities'.
through editing volume and depth , movement and stasis, fine and shape and patterns of light and dark can be used to create a 'smooth continuity' or 'abrupt contrast'.
Graphic match: linkage of shot by graphic similarities:
The two images above are from different locations but have a graphic match because with the rule of thirds the artist i framed central in both and there is objects like the pillars in the first image and building in the second going up vertically.
graphic continuity: centre of interest is constant through out cuts, maintaing a lighting level ,avoiding strong colour clashes.
Graphic discontinuity: contrasts colour and footage types, movement and stillness, placement/shape of focus figures .
Spatial:
spatial mainly concerns film but elements can connect in music videos as well. this theory is about space (setting and location) and the relation between and manipulation of different points through similarity, difference & development.
Continuity editing - produces analytical space through an establishing shot followed up by smaller range shots
The Kuleshov effect has no establishing shot and leads to the inference of a single locale, a 'spatial whole' based on seeing only portions of the space.
Temporal:
temporal involves time of action contributes to the plots' manipulation of story of story time which is mainly the order and duration and frequency. this theory shows how the order of events can be controlled which changes in story-plot relations which interrupt 'temporal' order.
this can be done through flash backs to past events to give the audience more knowledge easily and flash forwards to future events creating enigma this is shown in the music video below.
rhythmic:
Rhythmic editing is about the duration of shot, the length of each shot in relation and its pattern involving its accent, beat and tempo.
With this theory there is many different ways to create meaning through the editing like keeping all the shots the same length giving them a steady metrical beat. you can also make the shots steadily get longer which with gradually slowing down the tempo tension can be obtained. the is also the option to use successively shorter shots which is a convention of my music videos of my genre because hip hop is generally exciting music so accelerating the tempo would help achieve this like shown in the music video below.

- Occasionally there are some useful points being made, showing some underatanding, but these are far too few.
- Some attempt at using visual material.
EBI
- Jordan, currently all of your posts are either incomplete or not started. This is not acceptable. You are doing yourself out of a good mark. I know that you will work hard on the music video and the ancillary tasks, but unfortaunately that alone will not get you your target grade or the grade that you will deserve, because the written part of the coursework is worth 40%. If you do not work harder you will deny yourself a good grade.
- Read what I wrote on your blog last time. You have not acted on any of this. This is unacceptable.
- Post 17, you need to explain whether each record label would be suitable for your artist.
- You need to include much more visual material.

Advertisement research
This advert shows big boy which is good promotion for him but it doesn't talk about his music which is not affective advertising. This advertisement should include text or visuals to advertise his music otherwise is only adding to his face recognition and not helping selling his music.
This magazine advert is more effective than the big boy advert because it goes into good detail on his up and coming music as well as the drink which will help both of the brands. The bad point to this advertisement is the is to much text so it may not attract readers to read all of it.
This advert is the least effective out of the three because it doesn't really talk about b.o.b or the product he is advertising which means it just give b.o.b face recognition.

album cover
This cover of Tinie Tempah's album disc-overy is a very conventional cover for a urban hip hop artist with bright colours and also shows the artist in the centre and often has jewellery on show as well. hip hop artists often has the persona as being self centered and very confident so they are often shown in there own album covers and also placed in a prominent position with flashy colours fitting with there image.
This album by Wretch 32 is called black and white which explains the unusual lack of colour from a hip hop artist album cover. like Tinie Tempah wretch 32 is displayed very largely
Chipmunk's album titled transition is named around his transition in life after his success on his first album and singles. It is a sterotype that rappers are very concious of there image and this album cover shows chipmunk and his new image with a lot of tattos and less jewellery. This album cover supports and also breaks the conventions of a hip hop artists album cover because the is no flashy jewellery but there flahy lighting on this picture with is a comman convention.

this video like a lot of hip hop videos uses fear as a form of excitement and is set in a very dark warehouse with grafitti on the walls and smoke in the air and a scary wheel chair. the style of video in hip hop is often designed around the style of song and the song is raw/explicit so the videos are often raw aswell
This song hosts a lot of hip hip artists which is a convention of hip hop songs to have a lot of artist on them. The video is in a dark location with bright flashing lights throughout which fits with the stereotypical personer of a rap artist.
This videos is set in like a scary science lab with fire and smoke which is a convention of hip hop music videos to be shot in dark and moody environments.
This music video is based around the film 'Paranormal Activity' and is horror music video which is pushing the boundary of the convention of hip hop music videos being scary. this video like 'forever' by drake also hosts lots of artists.

conventions of a music video
- A music video must be correctly lip synced or have a story line like Ed sheeran a team
- A music video must be edited pase wise according to the the song to not create viewer fatigue
- Music videos are often attention grabbing through clothes carz money or a special effects
- a music video must be editied with approprate shots to not break a views suspention of disblief with for example a baby in a night club which is clearly not believable which would remind the audience its not real effecting there enjoyment
- a music video is often shot in ocorring to the song because a good music video repersents the song fully aswell as being entertaining
Analysis of a low budget music video 2
This is a music video which me and my group performed, shot and edited our self which is a representation of the recent London riots. the video follows the convention with performance shots lip synched but also does go agaisnt them because it has only one angle for performance shots and and is shot in the style of the news.
This video cost us nothing to make and is still entertaining because its entertainment factors was able to be achieved with creativity and the fact that we released it the day the riots stopped which surprised viewers and it was fresh in there minds so they related to it more. This music video was shoot in the style of a news broadcast which was original and the originality in its self is entertainment. This video also contains footage from the riots so its almost informative as well. In this music video we had to pay close attention to costumes to make sure the audiences could understand whats each part of the song was representing making it look more realistic increasing audience enjoyment

Analysis of a low budget music video 1
This a a low budget music video from UK urban underground duo Krept and Konan. This video is very conventional because it doesn't have a chorus in the song and is filmed with standard equipment and shot in a basic location with mainly performances shots. This video is slightly different from other low budget videos because it has a lot of props to illustrate aspects of lyrics throughout. This is there unofficial remix version of jay z and Kayne west - Otis. This video has one location and no special affects but was still entertaining and went viral with over 2 million YouTube views in 24. This video is very cosmical and in expensive because it uses loads of cheap prob and great performance. This video was edited well with parts in slow motion and good cut away placement .This video makes me come to the conclusion that good performance and creativity will create a entertaining music video.
Analysis of a rock video 3
This is an example of a modern day rock video which doesn't typically involves all the conventions of a older/typical rock video because the genre is forever evolving. The rock genre/rock songs can also be considered as pop so this video is a repersentation of both. This video goes against the generral conventions because it holds alot of cut aways and normal performance mainly from a pop artist featureing on the song.
Analysis of a rock video 2
this is a very typical rock video with on stage performance, dramtic gothic clothes and make up and things smashing and buring. this is a rock video by the World famous band kiss whos contriversal songs and performance helped shape rock the genre today. This video contains very energetic performances in a variety of location from the group which creats a very entertaining music video
Analysis of a rock video 1
This Rock video is by Lil Wayne it is a typical rock video with instruments like guitars and drums being played in the video but this video is different to your conventional rock video because Lil Wayne isn't a rock artist so that's adds an element of surprise and freshness to the video which makes great entertainment. The video is set in rock star house and set with fast pase editing with loads of fades to leave no viewer fatigue
Analysis of a pop video 3
A Music video can only be successful if it achieves its aims and entertains is target market and hopefully anyone who views it. This Music video had a hard task because it had a very broad target market. This song was released in England and to be his debut single in America. The music video is set in picturesque locations in America which leaves the American viewing population comfortable with the location. The video includes cut aways which make up a story of a little boy which could be representing Tinie Tempah but that is left open to imagination of the audition adding entertainment.
Analysis of a pop video 2
This Music video is great promotion for several of the popular chart topping artist who are on this song. This song combines 7 artist which has all had success in the UK charts. this collaboration of artists provides the entertainment in it self so all the video needs to do is display them in a simple but interesting fashion as it has done. this song and video isn't your general 'pop' but the term pop derives from popular which this track was both commercially and statistically because is was not only did it enter the UK chart with out the general single promotion. this track also has received over 6 million YouTube views and over 24,000 likes.
Analysis of a pop video 1
This is a successful promotional music video with over 200 million YouTube views. This music video shows the two world famous musicians Rihanna and Drake which combines the two fan bases which is great promotion for both artist. Rihanna clothing option as normal pushes fashion trends with her very unusual colour co-ordination. With the track being Rihanna's song and it starting with a verse from drake made the track seem like a joint track. This is a good video because its entertaining which is the most important thing and also another good point is the video highlight the artist. The plain normal backgrounds and simplistic settings highlights Rihanna and makes her stand out. Rihanna stands out because her outfit doesnt fit in with the background.
